Friendship with Disabled Students

More information about our elementary students friendship with disabled students from the specialized school # 86.

On May 20, 2008 40 elementary school students went to the trip around the most famous place in Ferghana region, Kokand town, a place of ruling the last Ferghana Region King (XV111-X1X centuries). Before the trip our students together with the disabled students made a research on history of the most famous places in Ferghana Region – the birth place of local ceramics – Rishtan, and traditional silk fabric “ATHLAS” – Margilan, the palace of the last Ferghana Regional King Khudoyar-Khan, etc. Students parents helped to find and organize information for presentations. The best presentation was about Kokand town, that’s why we decided to start our historical trips with Kokand. We visited Khudoyar-Khan Palace, Local Art Museum and have learned a lot about traditions and culture of our motherland. Especially important was that our friends from the specialized school # 86 were with us. Because themselves they couldn’t visit such interesting historical places

On April 25, 2008 a group of students at the age of 9-10 years old with their parents and a teacher of English Nargiza Khasanova from school # 40 “Parvoz” from Ferghana city, Uzbekistan, visited a specialized school # 86 for physically disabled students to conduct a presentation and planting GYSD action.

They defined and discussed pluses and minuses of modern progress, Ferghana regional ecological problems and were thinking of what we should do to protect our nature and help our regional ecology. For the lesson the students prepared

After the lesson all the participants together planted flowers (daisies) in the yard of the school and in the streets of local Makhallya “Shadiyana”. Finally. The students draw pictures on the ground of their school about the future of of Nature in our city, our country and our world. Also group of 9-graders presented their experience of helping old people from their community (makhallya “Shodiana”).
Working in 5 groups, students developed their own plan of helping and supporting old people of their makhallya. And during the April 22-26 week they made a list of lonely old people who need help and support. Students-volunteers visited old people at homes, cleaned their yards, rooms, helped with shopping in the market, cooked food. It was a real help to real people.

Learn about Disabilities

Working with the Special Olympics is a great way to get involved with the community. Not only do you gain a sense of accomplishment, but you get to learn about various physical and mental disabilities. As teachers, it is important to learn about various disabilities because they will be in the general classroom.

Ideas from KSU

Since gas prices are going up and people are finding drugs in the water system many Americans are trying to find a way to help the earth without changing to much. There are list of things on the internate and the news such as: going the speed limit while driving, not flushing every time people go #1 in the bathroom, be careful about how people dispose of waste, and of course recycling. The U.S. seems to make this a mission, but i know other people around the world are too. so i was wondering what people from different countries are doing? anything different?

Re: Teaching Good Deeds

I think teaching good deeds to young children is a great idea. I myself want to teach my students when I have a classroom of my own about good deeds and things we can do to change the world or even our community. I think teaching kids while they are young about good deeds is a great idea and then they can use the skills they learened as they get older and maybe make a big difference for their community or the world one day!

Good Deeds in Indonesia

"One of IEARN’s projects “GOOD DEEDS" attracts my interest. There are so many little things we can do and they can be regarded as good deeds. I can inform my students about this. “GOOD DEEDS" are around us, even at school. Keeping everything clean, throwing rubbish or even used candies plastics into dustbin are among good deeds, so simple! “GOOD DEEDS" is in harmony with my school effort to create a nice, friendly and clean environment."

GCE Students Promote Community Service As Part of Islam

Six GCE students at the Al Ma’arifa Secondary Girls School have put together a brochure promoting community service and emphasizing its important place in Islam as part of the Good Deeds project.

The Good Deeds project encourages students to make the world a little bit better th
rough small acts of kindness. They then share the stories of their good works in the iEARN online forums and learn from reading about the good deeds of their peers from around the world. The project aims to create proactive citizens who are able to serve their community, country, and the world in a positive and dynamic way.

The brochure devotes a panel to the emphasis given to community service in Islam, from the many Hadiths of the Prophet Muhammad to the rewards promised to those who do good deeds. As the students point out, the rewards to be expected are spiritual in nature.

The brochure also suggests some ways that people can serve their community and points out the advantages of community service to society as a whole as well as the individual involved.

Indonesia: Small Steps to Do a Great Good Deed

Hi, every body! My name is Ayun, one of the students of Senior High School 1 Bogor, Indonesia. When my teacher informed my class about this project, I was so enthusiastic to join it. It is a great pleasure to me to share my experience and to know more about other people experiences in the world about it. Everyone has a good side, so it's very usual if all people in the world do good deeds, even just small things. For example, when I see trash on the class floor, I throw it to the bin.

May be that deed is just a simple thing but if we don't do it, there will be a great danger waiting for us like flood (it happens now in many island in Indonesia). So let's do many good deeds. Just remember, a person can make a difference! That's all, I hope this can inspire others, especially my fellow students in Indonesia!

Indonesia: My Brother and I

A good deed is like a train.
Once you do it, the other will follow...

My name is Bella. I live in Bogor and the student of 12th grade Senior High School 1 Bogor. I would share a good deed that I had experienced, so simple but it built a deep impression to me.

About 3 months ago, my little brother was seriously ill. Something wrong happened in his stomach. The doctor decided to do a surgery to him and it's done successfully. My mother and my elder brother accompanied him in the hospital every day, but I had to go to school by myself.
For the first time in my life, I went to school by train. So I had to wake up earlier (at 05.00 AM) in order to catch the first train. Sometimes I had to stand up because there's no empty seat to sit. My friends asked me,"Don't you get tired because of it?". Undoubtedly I said,"No, I enjoy it, eventhough I had to to school earlier and went home late, I just enjoy it!". Well, I did it because I love my brother. I'll do everything for him.

After one month, everything has been back to be normal again. Suddenly my brother gave me a gift that he bought . He said he gave it as a big thank for me. I'm so happy because he has been recovered.

Indonesia: Simple Good Deed in the Bus

My name is Indhie Hanifah and I live in Serpong, but I study in Senior High School 1 Bogor. One day, I wanted to go to Bogor by bus. I was sitting in the bus when the old lady got into the bus and stood beside me. She looked tired, so I gave my seat to her. I knew I would be tired but I was happy because I have done something good.

A few weeks later, when I went to Bogor from Serpong by bus again, I had no seat, and I had to stand up in the crowded bus until the bus arrived in Bogor, it was a long and bad journey. I started to get sick. Suddenly, there was a man who gave me his seat because I might look pale. I will never forget his favor, and I had an impression that if we help other, some day we'll need other people's help, it'll come. Trust me.

Good Deeds in Uzbekistan

Dear friends,

our English teacher Nargiza Hasanova and her students continue their work on "Good Deeds' project.

Character Counts in Canada

Janeville Elementary School has undertaken a character education project that focuses on the six Pillars of Character of the Character Counts initiative of the Josephson Institute of Ethics in California . Each month one pillar is the focus of an introductory school-wide assembly, discussed in individual classrooms and is highlighted in morning announcements.

Each student is then tasked to find a specific example during the month when they displayed the featured characteristic and to write about it. This example is signed by both the student and a parent and brought to school. Students who return the signed examples are rewarded with a bracelet inscribed with the featured pillar to be worn as a reminder of the importance of having good character. We want to share our stories because we know that if we all displayed the pillars of good character we would be able to “Change the World”.

In the month of November we learned about being trustworthy. This means that we are honest, we tell the truth, we keep promises and secrets and we are loyal so people can trust us. Trustworthy people don’t lie, steal or cheat. They have the courage to do the right thing and to stand up for what they believe even when it is hard to do.

The following are examples of how students at Janeville Elementary School were trustworthy:

Kindergarten Students

Arianna: “I told Mommy the truth about my time outs.”

Jacob: “I watched my little sister for my mom in our living room while she folded laundry and cooked our supper.”

Colby: “One of my friends told me a secret and I never told any-one.”

Taylor: “I kept a secret from mommy about her Christmas gift.”

Grade One Students

Allyson: “I told the truth when Mommy asked me questions about putting water on my goop and also when I told Mommy that I watched TV already that day.”

Taylor : “I promised my mom I would help keep my room clean and make my bed.”

Jack: “I took care of my dog when my mom was away. I helped my dad when my mom was away.”

Sydney: “I played cards with my Mom and I did not cheat. I followed the rules. Playing a game is a good way to practice being trustworthy.”

Cody: “I didn’t push Breanna into her bed. Daddy trusted me to go over to Nanny’s.”

Sheradin: “I kept a secret of the present for my cousin’s birthday.”

Grade Two Students

Tiffany: “My mom trusted me to feed the fish and my cat.”

Matthew: “This month I was trustworthy because I helped out with my baby brother when my mom needed me.”

Nathan: “I kept a promise to mommy to behave properly in church. I haven’t stolen anything ever or cheated.”

Jesse: “I promised to make a Titanic picture for my friend and I did it for my friend.”

Rebecca: “I was told a secret and I kept it.”

Brett: I lost my glasses and I told mom and dad instead of hiding it.”

Jacob: “I tell my mom the truth when I do something wrong.”

Alexa: I gave my mummy the change from the hairdresser when I got my hair cut with my nanny.”

Grade Three Students

Dwayne: “I helped my mom with the groceries and put them away and I did.”

Spencer: “My mom trusted me to feed my dog.”

Shelby: I promised my mom that I would not cry about going to Mimi’s on Friday when I really didn’t want to go.”

Jordan J.: “I helped mom. My mom and dad were sick with the flu. I was very trustworthy, she said, by helping her do things and keeping Jared out of trouble.”

Grade Four Students

Brittany: “Every weekend when I go to my grandmother’s house, she goes somewhere and I take care of her dog. I feed the dog, walk her and she goes to use the washroom outside. That’s what I do for my grandma.”

Ashlyn: “I told my friends that I would play with them next recess because I was playing with my other friends this recess. That’s why I am trustworthy at school and at home. I said what I was going to do.”

Darian: My friend Alesha called and said that she was throwing a party for our friend

Ariana. I was going to call her but Alesha said not to tell her about the party. I did not and she had a big surprise at the party.”

James: “I told my Grampy that I would go to the store with him and I went with him.”

Jordan H.: “I accidentally broke a window and I told my parents and I paid for a new window.”

Grade Five Students

Ian: “I took my dog for a walk because my mom asked me to when she went on a vacation and I said yes. He really needed to go for a walk. I said I would take care of my brother and I did.”

Samantha: “I was helping Jenni and Grace with taking down the bulletin boards. I could have left them to do it by them selves but I stayed t help them instead.”

Jenni: “I always did my homework on time when my mother asked me to. I was asked to look after all our parcels so mom could go in a small store. That was how I was a trustworthy person.”

Grace: “I found money at the store. My mom asked me if the money was mine and I said no and gave it to the person that had lost it.”

Kelly: I went over to my neighbour’s house and my mom told me to be back by 6:45 and I promised her I would be home by 6:45 and at 6:45 I was home.

Christina: “My mom trusts me to look after Connor when she goes to get a bath or check the fire so that is how I know what trustworthy is.”

Nov. & Dec. Character Trait

Our Elementary School is big on Character Education. Our character Trait for November and December is Compassion, so we have been talking with students about what caring about others and what “good deed” we could do to help others.

This led to the food drive for the local food bank in November.
And now we have a toy drive for children in hospital. The students bring new toys that will be donated to sick children.

Re: Teaching Good Deeds

Nowadays most of us lost our feeling .Caring our surrounding or others seem to be a legend or a strange thing, because we are so busy with the world business for our own need.Sometimes we forget that the real life is not here.Really good lesson for me " Good Deed". So that I told my students if they want to join this project. They are really enthusiastic. My students are about 13 -15 years.By the way, I am a teacher of senior high school in pekanbaru, Indonesia.

This morning , I entered the class showing this project.I gave them about 30 minutes to go out from the class and observe what can they do as a good deed around the school. Then they made the reports. There are so many little things that affect the great benefits.

Crisis in Bangladesh!

By now you are aware about the devastation of hurricane SIDR which took away around 3,500 lives (as roughly counted up to 20.11.2007, the figure is raising daily) and damaged all most all the properties of the people in the south, south-western coastal parts of Bangladesh. The damages are not repairable. Nevertheless, to help mitigate the sufferings of the affected people and to assist them in their survival YES-alumni Bangladesh & Bangladesh Education and Resource Network (bEARN)/iEARN-Bangladesh have taken a decision to distribute relief in the form of food grains. In this solemn venture YES-alumni members are raising funds. Also bEARN will participate by donating money in their efforts.

A team of 10 members consisting of YES-alumni and bEARN staff will physically go to Patuakhali district, southern part of Bangladesh and worse affected area in the SIDR, on 21st November 2007 to distribute relief and to console the people there in their time need. The team will purchase 2& ½ metric tons of rice and ½ metric ton pulse which will be distributed amongst the affected people at Patuakhali.
For information, this is not the end. We will take some more drives to raise funds from available sources and later distribute them in suitable forms. In this respect we would appreciate any kind of cooperation and assistance in our humanitarian services from any person & corner.

Re: Teaching Good Deeds

On the topic of good deeds, do you think the laws of life should be an encouragement for good deeds? You are rewarded for good deeds or you are punished? Should people do good deeds for personal satisfaction or for recognition? Are the laws of life fair as far as justifying what is good and what is bad? A person steals food to feed their family or someone who is hungry, is that a good or bad deed? A person gives money to a poor person to buy food, but in reality they are supporting that person's drug habit? Just some questions to ponder..

Students presented their own chosen country and sold their dishes by books, stationary and by money. The received things were donated to orphans and physically disabled students. With the help of money we organized the resource center and bought TV set and DVD.
This Fair taught children to be kind and not to stay aside when someone need their help, and based on the education sphere students learned dishes of different nationalities and info about the countries.

Here are responses of my students:

Re: Teaching Good Deeds

I agree Good Deeds are contagious! As a pre-service teacher I hope to instill in my students a sense of good deeds/community service whether it be giving a pencil to a student who needs one, sending a letter to a soldier, letting someone in line at the grocery store go ahead of you, volunteering at a soup kitchen, or any other good deed to make someone smile. I believe a good deed can be anonymous or not. If we set an example for our students, they will follow.

Teaching Good Deeds

This project is great. I am a pre-service teacher and I just want to comment that good deeds should be taught in school as well as in the home. I hope to incorporate this into my classroom on a daily basis. I want my students to want to help others. I want them to understand that you don't have to be an adult or be rich to do a good deed. There are so many ways that students can help others, and it is the job of teachers (not just parents) to open their eyes to this information. I am interested to hear from any teachers who have suggestions on working this into the curriculum or classroom in general.
